What do I do if I need to be using a different version of the AXIS firmware?

You may be required to use a different version of the AXIS firmware to the one which you have installed. This may be a later version, or it may be an earlier one. Below are some instructions on what to do in the various scenarios.

Upgrading to a more recent version

In the AXIS portal, select Maintenance from the left hand menu. This will open up the Maintenance panel. Select the Upgrade option in the Firmware Upgrade section on the right hand side and follow through the steps to upgrade your firmware. Please note that you will need to have downloaded the required firmware version from the AXIS website in order to do this.

Downgrading to an earlier version - Rollback method

To use this option, you need to satisfy two criteria:

  • There must be an earlier version available which you can roll back to. If there is not, the Rollback button will not be enabled and you will need to use the Device Manager method instead.
  • If there is an available rollback version, it should be the same primary version as your required version. For example, if you need version 11.X then you should not roll back to version 10.X and would be better to use the Device Manager method instead.

In the AXIS portal, select Maintenance from the left hand menu. This will open up the Maintenance panel. Select the Rollback option in the Firmware Rollback section on the right hand side and follow through the steps to roll back your firmware.

Downgrading to an earlier version - Device Manager method

  • Download Device Manager from the AXIS website. A link is provided below and you will need the full install with both server and client:

https://www.axis.com/support/tools/axis-device-manager#download-block

  • In Device Manager, click the Add Devices icon to add the camera you are working with.
  • The device should now be listed in Device Manager – right click on the device and select Firmware Management then Upgrade Firmware and then Yes when prompted that the device will be inaccessible.
  • The Upgrade column will then prepopulate a drop-down list with available versions – select the version you require.
  • There is a checkbox for Factory Default – try it without this selected at first and then try again with it selected if the update did not work.
  • The update request will then create a Task – you can check the task’s progress and whether it was successful in the Alarms/Tasks panel below.
  • If the update did not work with Factory Default switched off, then try again with it switched on. If you have to use Factory Default, you will need to make a couple more changes afterwards:
    • Set the device password again by clicking the Set Password link which will appear in the Status column.
    • You may also need to manually change the IP Address back to your required setting. This can be done by right clicking on the device, selecting Assign IP Address, and then manually assigning as required.
